GBSC is very interested in bringing new people to the sport of soaring, and increasing the capabilities of its members. Therefore instruction is a major part of GBSC's operation. At least 10 club members are Certified Flight Instructors/Glider; they rotate weekend days, so each is "on duty" about one day every 5 weeks, (Instructor Schedule) but in practice several are often available on weekend days, so the club can handle more than one student at a time. |

Flight instruction is offered to all GBSC members without charge. The GBSC has approximately 12 FAA licensed flight instructors capable of providing instruction at all levels. On each weekend day during the season, one instructor is assigned to provide instruction for the day. In practice, often more than one instructor will be on the field at any given time. Since a student is likely to fly with several different instructors, each GBSC student has a Glider Pilot Training Record that indicates, at a glance, the items that the student has mastered and what is left to be done. When this record, as well as the FAA required logbook, is handed to the instructor at the time of the lesson, it will immediately be known what needs to be worked on at any given time. Instruction is scheduled on a "first come first served" basis. When you arrive at the field, sign up for a lesson. On busy days, lengthy waits are possible so it pays to arrive and sign up early. A student is normally charged fees for the aero tow and for the use of the glider. There is no charge for the instruction. In order to encourage early flights, the club waives the glider usage fee and charges only for the aero tow for lessons launched before noon. The length of a lesson varies greatly - depending on the weather. If soaring conditions are minimal or non-existent, a flight from a 3,000 foot aero tow may last 15 to 18 minutes. However, if soaring conditions exist, a lesson might last for an hour or more and may reach altitudes in excess of 10,000 feet (all from a 3,000 foot tow). This is what soaring is all about! If you have any questions about flight instruction at GBSC, please send email to a GBSC Flight Instructor. If you plan to fly with us, you'll need to read the |
